Major Windus was the pilot of a C-46D Commando transport with the 34th Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Wing. On November 15, 1952, his aircraft was transporting personnel from Kangnung Airfield (K-18) to Pohang Airfield (K-3). It crashed into the Sea of Japan shortly after takeoff killing ten on board. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
