Second Lieutenant Cain was a platoon leader with Company D, 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. On January 12, 1954, he was in charge of a demolition squad clearing a path through a minefield near Igilli, North Korea, when a squad member detonated a mine killing him.
