First Lieutenant Smith was the pilot of a F-84D Thunderjet fighter with the 154th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 136th Fighter Bomber Wing. On May 17, 1952, while on a combat mission with three other F-84's he was attacked by two MiGs. His aircraft was hit, went into a flat spin and crashed. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
