Sergeant Bailey was a member of Company M, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On May 1, 1967, he was being evacuated in a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) when it crashed in the sea offshore South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
