Lieutenant Junior Grade Bixel was a member of Attack Squadron 115, Carrier Air Wing 5, U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS MIDWAY (CVA-41). On October 24, 1972, he the pilot of in a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) attempting a carrier night landing and crashed on the deck. He ejected but could not be found. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
