Sergeant First Class Buckley was a member of the Mortar Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 21, 1966, he was rendering combat support to Company C northeast of An Khe near the Song Ba River in South Vietnam, when his unit was ambushed. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
