Corporal Colombo was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164, Marine Air Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On March 6, 1968, he was Crew Chief on a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A). He was on a maintenance test flight from the Amphibious Assault Ship USS VALLEY FORGE (LPH-8) when it crashed into the South China Sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
