Dr. William McCully James was born in Richmond, Virginia on May 29, 1880. He graduated from the University of Virginia Medical Department in 1906. He was appointed physician in the Panama Canal service on July 7, 1906. He married Mary Gurley McCulloch in Waco, Texas in 1909. They moved to Ancon, Canal Zone, where Dr. James was well known for his work on malaria, blackwater fever and amoebic dysentery. He died on July 10, 1942 in the Panama City Hospital and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
