First Lieutenant Jones was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 39th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 35th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On October 28, 1951, while on a combat mission and after a rocket pass one mile northeast of Chamgmong-myon-do, Korea, his aircraft crashed into the water. His remains were recovered.
