Lieutenant Commander Tromp, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 115, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On April 17, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) on an armed reconnaissance mission about 150 miles north of the Demilitarized Zone near Vinh, North Vietnam. During the return flight his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
