For his leadership and great valor, Captain Walmsley was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Walmsley was the pilot of a B-26B Invader bomber of the 8th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. During a night mission on September 14, 1951, he expended his bombs on an enemy rail system near Yangdok, Korea. Then he directed friendly aircraft fire by using the aircraft's searchlight to illuminate the targets. He continued until his aircraft was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on February 28, 1954.
