Sergeant First Class Bensinger was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving three years in the South Pacific. In Korea, he was a member of Company D, 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Kunu-ri, North Korea on December 1, 1950 and died in a prison camp at Hoboing, North Korean from malnutrition, exposure and dysentery on January 19, 1951. Sgt. 1st Class Bensingers’ remains were identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in 2017. His name is permanently engraved in the Korean War “Courts of the Missing” at the Honolulu memorial.
