Corporal Ervin was a member of Headquarters Battery, 57th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division serving as one of approximately 2,500 U. S. and 700 Republic of Korea soldiers assembled into the 31st Regimental Combat Team (RCT), also known as Task Force (TF) MacLean and later as TF Faith. On November 28, 1950, he was mortally wounded when hit in the neck by shrapnel from a mortar round. CPL Ervin's remains were not returned by the Communists forces during Operation Glory in the fall of 1954. His remains were declared unrecoverable on January 16, 1955. In 2001, the 21st Joint Recovery Operation teams conducted recovery operations on the eastern bank of the Chosin Reservoir, Changjin County, D.P.R.K. His remains were one of seven individuals recovered during these operations. CPL Ervin's remains were identified on February 9, 2016. CPL Ervin's name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, HI.
