Private First Class Thompson was a member of Company M, 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During an enemy night assault near Haman, South Korea on August 6, 1950, he positioned his machine-gun so that he could deliver deadly fire on the enemy. Although mortally wounded by shell fragments and small arms fire, he continued to hold off the enemy and permit his unit to withdraw. |
