Ensign Bateman was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter-bomber with Fighter Squadron 53 aboard the aircraft carrier USS ESSEX (CV-9). On October 28, 1951, his aircraft was hit by enemy anti-aircraft artillery fire during a glide bombing run at BU 7056, lost a section of its wing, crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. |
