Lieutenant Commander Bowen was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter and the commander of Fighter Squadron 114 (884) aboard carrier USS KEARSARGE (CVA-33). On November 8, 1952, while attacking enemy artillery positions near Wosan, North Korea, his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the vicinity of Pyongyang, North Korea. He was presumed dead on November 9, 1953. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
