Commander Evans was the pilot of an AD-4 Skyraider dive bomber and commanded Attack Squadron 75 aboard the USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31). On December 5, 1952, he was leading his squadron in an attack on troop targets in "Cherokee Strip" when his aircraft was struck by automatic weapons fire and heavily damaged. He tried to bail out but could not. |
