Technical Sergeant Newell was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with Marine Fighter Squadron 323, Marine Air Group 12 aboard the aircraft carrier USS BADOENG (CVE-116). On December 7, 1950, while making a strafing run on enemy positions near Hagaru-ri, Korea, his aircraft was hit by small arms fire and crashed into a hillside. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. |
