First Lieutenant Bancroft was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a HO3S-1 Sikorsky helicopter with Marine Observation Squadron 6, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 29, 1950, while searching for a downed friendly aircraft near Uijongbu, Korea, his helicopter was hit by enemy fire and crashed ten miles northeast of Seoul. He was rescued but died shortly thereafter. |
