Corporal Vittori, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He and two other volunteers led an assault on advancing enemy forces on Hill 749, northeast of the "Punchbowl" that permitted his unit to consolidate its position. Later he singlehandedly manned a machine-gun isolated from his unit to thwart the enemy assault. Although badly wounded he managed to kill over 200 enemy soldiers before he was mortally wounded by enemy machine-gun and small arms fire.
