Staff Sergeant Windrich was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a platoon sergeant from Company I, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On December 2, 1950, he organized his platoon to hold off vicious counterattacks by Chinese forces near Yudam-ni, North Korea. Although seriously wounded, he rescued seven wounded comrades. He continued to defend his position until he died from loss of blood. |
