Captain Laney was a decorated veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a pilot of a B-26C Invader bomber with the 8th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. On May 14, 1951, during his 38th mission, he risked his life to successfully attack an enemy convoy at low altitude near Pyongyang, North Korea. On June 29, 1951, contact with his aircraft was lost, he was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
