Airman Second Class Newell was a member of the 335th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter Interceptor Group. On November 15, 1952, he was a passenger on a C-46D Commando transport from the 34th Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Wing. The aircraft was transporting personnel from Kangnung Airfield (K-18) to Pohang Airfield (K-3) in South Korea. It crashed into the Sea of Japan shortly after takeoff killing ten on board. His remains were not recovered. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. |
