Sergeant Chitwood was the tail gunner on a B-26B Invader bomber with the 13th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Wing. On May 5, 1951, while attacking Wonsan, North Korea, the aircraft struck an obstacle damaging a propeller and later crashed into the sea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on May 1, 1952. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. |
