ABMC Cemeteries to host centennial events as ABMC turns 100 on March 4, 2023

As the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) turns 100 on March 4, 2023, all ABMC cemeteries across the globe will host centennial events to mark the agency’s 100-year anniversary and honor the legacy of the service members buried or memorialized at our sites.
Details of the events can be found below.
 

Aisne-Marne American Cemetery 

Starting at 4 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Ardennes American Cemetery 

Starting at 2 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a humble ceremony after which an olive tree will be planted in honor of ABMC’s centennial and in remembrance of the fallen service members commemorated at our cemetery.

Brittany American Cemetery 

Starting at 4 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a humble ceremony after which an olive tree will be planted in honor of ABMC’s centennial and in remembrance of the fallen service members commemorated at our cemetery.

Brookwood American Cemetery 

Starting at 2 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a concert after which ABMC’s centennial documentary will be played and artwork presented to the audience.

Cambridge American Cemetery 

Starting at 4:30 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Clark Veterans Cemetery

Starting at 4:00 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a tour of the cemetery after which an olive tree will be planted in honor of ABMC’s centennial, and wreaths will be laid, and the U.S. flag will be lowered in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Corozal American Cemetery 

Starting at 4:00 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Epinal American Cemetery 

Starting at 2:30 p.m., local time, the event will start with a guided tour of the cemetery and be followed by a ceremony, the planting of an olive tree and the lowering of the colors in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery.

Flanders Field American Cemetery 

Starting at 4:25 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid and the flag will be lowered in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery.

Florence American Cemetery 

Starting at 11 a.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery

Starting at 4:15 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid followed by the lowering of the colors in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery 

Starting at 4 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Lorraine American Cemetery 

Starting at 3 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Luxembourg American Cemetery 

Starting at 4 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Manila American Cemetery

Starting at 4:30 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid followed by the lowering of the colors in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery 

Starting at 4 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

Mexico City National Cemetery 

Starting at 11:00 a.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid, followed by the planting of an olive tree in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery.

Netherlands American Cemetery 

Starting at 4:15 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a humble ceremony during which wreaths will be laid and the flag will be lowered in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery.

Normandy American Cemetery

Starting at 6:30 p.m., local time, the centennial celebration will continue with a ceremony and luminary, as candles will be placed on each headstone, which will be concluded at 9 p.m. with the lowering of the colors in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery. 

On Saturday, March 4, and Sunday, March 5, our staff will offer guided tours and talks to visitors:
- 20-min English guided talk at 10:10 a.m. and 3:10 p.m.
- 1-hour English guided tour at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- 20-min French guided talk at 10:10 a.m. and 2:10 p.m.
- 1-hour French guided tour at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Please note that the cemetery on March 4 will close at 9:30 p.m. (last admission at 9 p.m.) for this special occasion.

North Africa American Cemetery 

Starting at 4 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony, which will begin with the planting of an olive tree to mark ABMC's centennial, followed by remarks and a wreath laying.

Oise-Aisne American Cemetery 

Starting at 4:00 p.m., local time, the event will start with the dedication of the olive tree recently planted by the staff in honor of ABMC’s centennial followed by a wreath laying and the lowering of the colors in remembrance of the fallen service members commemorated at our cemetery.

Rhone American Cemetery

Starting at 3:00 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid, followed by the planting of an olive tree in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery.

Sicily-Rome American Cemetery

Starting at 4:00 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid and the flag will be lowered in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery.

Somme American Cemetery

Starting at 6 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid in honor of the fallen service members remembered at our cemetery.

St. Mihiel American Cemetery

Starting at 3 p.m., local time, the event will consist of a ceremony during which wreaths will be laid, followed by a guided tour of the cemetery in remembrance of the fallen service members honored at our cemetery. Our staff will also be providing a guided tour of Montsec Monument, located about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the cemetery.

Suresnes American Cemetery

Suresnes American Cemetery is hosting its centennial event on March 6, 2023.
Starting at 7 p.m., local time, visitors are invited to visit the cemetery, which will be decorated with candles on each headstone as a commemorative luminary in remembrance of the fallen service members honored there. The event will be covered live throughout the day on ABMC’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts @usabmc. Please join us in remembering our fallen and ABMC’s centennial.
