Lieutenant Rogers was a veteran of World War II and served in Korea. He was assigned to the training staff at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. On the night of November 7, 1952, he was leading trainees through an infiltration course when a fire broke out nearby. As he led his men to extinguish the fire, he accidentally kicked a live grenade, which exploded killing him.
