Sergeant Moran was a veteran of the Korean War. Upon his return to the U.S., he was assigned as an instructor at the Recruit Training Battalion at Fort Dix, New Jersey. On January 8, 1964, he was teaching a trainee to throw a live hand grenade. The grenade fell back into the trainees pit and Sergeant Moran fell upon it to save the trainee's life.
