This year marked the tenth anniversary of the Margraten Liberation Concert. The concert included a performance of 'Elegies' by Richard Danielpour. This piece is an homage by a daughter to a father who fell in World War II.
'Elegies' makes the connection that the cemetery in Margraten has made the war years very tangible. Danielpour was commissioned to compose 'Elegies' by the famous American mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. Her father was killed in action during World War II and is buried in Margraten. The work is based on a letter he wrote to his unborn daughter Frederica: It is a touching tribute by a daughter to the father she never knew.
Von Stade was born on June 1, 1945. Frederica von Stade's father is buried in Margraten, making this piece a particularly relevant and suitable tribute to everyone who fought for freedom during World War II. This memory is kept alive in Margraten with an annual concert. 'Elegies' is perfectly suited to the tradition of the Margraten Liberation Concert.
