Captain Affolder was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Affolder was a member of an U.S. Air Force airlift unit stationed at Tachikawa Air Force Base, Japan. On February 25, 1951, he was the co-pilot of a cargo aircraft on its return flight from Taegu Airfield ( K-2), South Korea to Tachikawa with an intermediate stop at Iwakuni, Japan. The aircraft crashed at Iwakuni, killing all three crew members.
