For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Allen was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Private First Class Allen was a member of Company A, 13th Engineer Combat Battalion, 7th Infantry Division in support of the 8th Republic of Korea Division. On February 13, 1951, the convoy in which he was driving was ambushed near Hoengsong, South Korea. He was struck by small arms fire several times but continued to drive until the truck in front of his stalled. He was evacuated to the field hospital in Wonju, South Korea where he died of those wounds the following day.
