Sergeant Alley was a member of the 601st Photographic Flight. On April 6, 1972, he was a photographer in a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Search and Rescue Helicopter (HH-53C) on a rescue mission of downed B-52 personnel near the Demilitarized Zone, South Vietnam. The aircraft was shot down landing on its side and burned. His remains were recovered on June 7, 1994 and identified on September 25, 1997. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
