Corporal Altizer was a member of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On October 8, 1969, he was participating in a river crossing operation in Phuoc Binh Province, South Vietnam, when the boat in which he was riding capsized and he drowned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
