Major Amos was a member of the 35th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 20, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a combat mission over Quang Tin Province halfway between Ben Giang, South Vietnam and Chavane, Laos. His aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on June 7, 1994 and identified on October 1, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
