Daniel Austin was an American born in Salem, Massachusetts on November 13, 1880. In 1909, he moved to Panama to work as a machinist for the Panama Canal Company. He was awarded the Roosevelt Medal for his work on the Canal. Upon retirement, he remained in the Canal Zone. He died on January 14, 1954 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery near his wife, Mercedes.
