Colonel Austin was a member of the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 19, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) over Ban Karai Pass, North Vietnam when it was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
