Joseph E. Austin was born in Luciano, Wisconsin on June 27, 1892. During World War I, he served as a Sergeant with the Quartermaster Corps in Panama. After the war, he remained in the Canal Zone working as a policeman for the Panama Canal Company. He died on December 5, 1943. He was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery then reinterred at the Corozal American Cemetery in 1979.
