Sergeant First Class Axtell was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He was seriously wounded at Waegwan, South Korea on September 17, 1950 and returned to duty on November 7, 1950. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Songanon-ni, South Korea on April 25, 1951 and died while a prisoner on December 5, 1951.
