Captain Backus was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 22, 1967, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission near Nam Dinh, North Vietnam when his aircraft was struck by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
