Major Bailey was a member of the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 10, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) leading a combat strike mission over Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam. After expending his ordnance, his plane crashed. His remains were recovered on October 4, 1995 and identified on February 19, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
