Private First Class Balentine was a member of the 3rd Platoon, 25th Reconnaissance Company, 25th Infantry Division. On January 4, 1951, his unit was screening the north-western sector of Seoul, South Korea, when it became surrounded by the enemy. While trying to infiltrate enemy lines, he was taken prisoner and died while a prisoner on June 18, 1951.
