Private First Class Bales was a member of Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On September 1, 1950, he was defending his position on Hill 311 near Yongsan, South Korea along the Naktong River Line against a North Korean attack. Initially, he was reported as missing, but later declared as Killed in Action.
