Major Barker was a member of 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. On March 20, 1971, he was flying in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) trying to extract ARVN troops from Laos, 20 west of Khe Sanh, when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on December 5, 2002 and identified on August 30, 2005. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
