Walter L. Barnhart was born in Pennsylvania on December 7, 1898. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 13, 1917 and served as a Seaman during World War I. He was was honorably discharged from the service aboard the destroyer, USS Leary on June 13, 1921. He moved to Panama to work as an Engineer with the for the District Engineer Section, U.S. Army in Panama. He died at the Gorgas Army Hospital on May 31, 1944 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery near his daughter, Leona del Carmen Barnhart.
