Second Lieutenant Bascom was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter with the 522nd Fighter-Escort Squadron, 27th Fighter-Escort Wing. On December 24, 1950, while on a combat mission, his aircraft crashed near Kopo-ri, Korea, about five miles southwest of Kimpo Airfield (K-14).
