First Lieutenant Batease was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Naval aviation training program. In Korea, he was a member of the 16th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 51st Fighter-Interceptor Group. Having completed 24 combat missions over Korea, he was killed in an aircraft accident in Japan on November 4, 1951.
