Airman First Class Battiste was the engineer of troop transport C-119C (51-8241) based at Rhein Main Air Force Base, Germany. On May 15, 1953, his aircraft was flying formation with other C-119C's, when it was hit by a F-84 Thunderjet and crashed near Mannheim, Germany killing three crew members.
