Second Lieutenant Bauer was a member of Battery C, 555th Field Artillery Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. On June 12, 1953, while supporting the 3rd Infantry Division near Kumsong, North Korea, he was seriously wounded and died of those wounds later that day.
