Private First Class Belk was a member of the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On September 14, 1951, during the assault on Hill 894, part of "Heartbreak Ridge" in North Korea, he was killed as he was driving to pick up a wounded officer and ran over a landmine. Private First Class Belk was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
