On June 24, 1951, two enemy battalions attacked his company near Sobangsan, North Korea. He left his foxhole firing his automatic rifle inflicting serious casualties upon the enemy. Although seriously wounded, he singlehandedly defended his position so his unit could withdraw until he was mortally wounded.
