For his leadership and extreme valor, Private First Class Bennett was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Private First Class Bennett was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On June 24, 1951, two enemy battalions attacked his company near Sobangsan, North Korea. He left his foxhole firing his automatic rifle inflicting serious casualties upon the enemy. Although seriously wounded, he singlehandedly defended his position so his unit could withdraw until he was mortally wounded.
