Captain Benney was a pilot of a L-20 observation aircraft with the 10th Liaison Squadron, 5th Air Force. On September 2, 1952, while on a fire control mission along Route 29, his aircraft struck a hillside southwest of Yangsu-ri Airfield (K-49).
